BA or BS degree for Marketing?

I am planning on majoring in Marketing and minoring in Communications (thoughts?job opportunities and outlooks?). Also, not sure which degree, BS or BA, will be best. All I know is, I will need a few more classes for a BS degree.

Hi Asmaa,

I would definitely aim for the BS in Marketing. There are more opportunities in sales and marketing than communications. Print media will soon be extinct like the Dodo Bird!

Steve’s Answer

More and more today Marketing is a data informed practice. My recommendation would be to pursue the degree that gives the best understanding of data and data informed marketing and driving business results. I believe that either a BA or a BS would be fine but the BS will probably lean more towards the analytics side of the degree which sets a good foundation for data enabled/informed marketing.

Steve recommends the following next steps:

Understand the requirements for each degree, focus your learning on the data and data science side of marketing and how to make marketing measurable and drive direct attributed business results.

Scott’s Answer

First congratulations for your effort to get a degree: ANY degree is better than No degree. I doubt it will matter if you receive the degree as a BA or a BS. More important will be your GPA, and the content of your electives, and the quality of the school you attend in the opinion of whatever employers you are targeting. Yes, I assume you know what markets are interesting to you, and which firms play in it. If you haven't decided, then this is your first step

Scott recommends the following next steps:

Research those firms: Where their HQ are located will give you a HUGE clue as to from which schools they hire. Go to LinkedIn and research Marketing employees of the firm to see their credentials. Try to match these to your own
Research markets about which you have interest. For example, Google "Marketing Real Estate" or, "Marketing Chemicals" or, "Marketing Shi-tzu Dogs" or "Marketing Casinos...." You get the idea.
