1. You need to come up with a product or a service. Therefore, you need to learn the skills that are relevant to creating a product or service. For example, if you want to open up a restaurant, you may need to learn how to cook and how to run a restaurant.

2. How to promote your business and get customers - i.e. marketing and sales.

3. How to raise the money that you need to start your business - i.e. finance

4. How to keep track of your finances, the money that you make and the expenses that you incur - i.e. accounting

5. How to hire and manage people

6. How to do things legally. You need to learn about the laws and regulations that are related to the kind of business that you want to start

7. How to get organized, plan things and get things done - i.e. project management

When starting a new business, entrepreneurs need to continuously innovate. If I had to recommend one book on that topic, I'd choose Eric Reis' "The Lean Startup". Exciting read about the theory (e.g., Build-Measure-Learn Feedback Loop) and practice of doing that.

To start a business, of any kind, you need to learn marketing and the fundamentals of business. If you plan on running everything in your business yourself then you also need to learn copywriting and content marketing. There are quite a few things you'll need to know before starting a business and the kind of business you're interested in having plays a big part in all that you'll have to learn. But the things I've mentioned are nonnegotiable...you must learn them. I am starting a business currently and these are the basics.

Say for example you wanted to start a vet clinic as your business, you would need to get a degree in animal science. If you wanted a construction business you'd need knowledge in that area. So it depends on the type of business, but no matter what, you must learn about marketing, business fundamentals, and writing. Being able to do math would also come in handy.

Below are my suggestions:
1. Think about what industry you have interest or you have strength
2. Do some analysis on the industry, eg entry criteria, competition status, any alternative or substitute, etc
3. Attend some industry related courses and management courses
4. Work in the industry some time to understand the operating model and establish people network
5. Start the business online first if possible

That's a big question. It can depend on the type of business. And it can be expensive. Here are some items to consider:
- if retail, you need to rent space to sell your product
- you will need to hire employees if the business is to be open on a regular basis
- you will need legal and tax expert advice and multiple forms of insurance (property, rental, liability)
- if retail, you will need a clear return policy
- advertising and marketing support will be needed to let potential customers be aware of your business
- you should plan on having sufficient funds beyond that needed to run the business to live on for at least six months before the business starts paying for itself.

The above are some necessary mechanics. Beyond that, you may need to do some market analysis to determine if there is a market for whatever business you envision.
