If I want to be a psychologist, what college courses should I take?

I am really interested in how the #human brain works. I would love to pursue a job that works with people and helps them understand how they are thinking. Being a #psychologist would be my dream job.

Thank you comment icon Hi Reid! There are so many college courses that you could take related to psychology. Depending on what classes your college offers, you will be able to pick and choose which ones interests you the most. One main course that all psychology students have to take is "Introduction to Psychology." This class will discuss the history of psychology, different techniques used in psychology and all of the different theories that have been formed over the years. You can take Child Psychology, Positive Psychology, and Behavioral Psychology...It's all up to you and what interests you specifically. Think about the type of field in psychology that you would like, to study, for example: (children, adults, mental health etc.). Fatimah
Thank you comment icon Hey Reid!! I hear you, when I was first getting into college it seemed like there were so many options for psychology classes and I didn't know which ones to take. It depends on what classes your school offers, but if you're looking to be a psychologist, I'd definitely get into some abnormal psychology courses and maybe some developmental psychology courses as well. Those types of courses typically go really in depth on the "whys" and "hows" of human behavior. Corinne

Thanks for your question .

Basically making career as a Psychologist is time taking process .

Traditionally the entire schooling requirement takes around six years . That includes a Bachelor Degree and a Master Degree.

Besides a PHD and further few years of internship as a professional experience is always required get a license for clinical position .

so all together the entire journey may take 10-12 years .

Hope this helps
Good Luck .

Hello Reid,

Great question! First starters you will need to take an Introduction to Psychology course. It will give you the foundations you need to get started in the field. You will also need Statistics and a Research Method course. Believe it or not psychology requires research and more importantly you should be able to read and interpret data. One of the courses that I encourage my psychology students to take no matter the field in psychology that they want to focus on is Abnormal Psychology. It is one of those courses which is not only interesting but I think can be used across the board. As you make your way through the psychology major you should begin to think about what area in psychology you want to into. Depending on what you decide will also determine some of the courses you will end up doing. Make sure that when you are setting up your classes for the semester you speak to and advisor or department advisor for them to guide you, and for you to ask questions about your future in psychology. Finally, it is also a good idea to read your school catalog so that you become familiar and understand the requirements and policies for the psychology major.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Best,

Arianna
