Most schools will not let you live off campus your first year, which is a good thing. Your first year is where you make most of your friendships and peer relationships that will carry you through college and beyond. Living off campus is great for many reasons but it can be isolating if you don't have friendships already established. Also, living off campus can force you to find your own transportation, you cannot really eat at the dining hall etc. Although the food isn't usually awesome, it's nice not to purchase and cook your own meals.
