Hello! Jobs in technology are pretty stable especially if you find an area in high demand (like security) with a lot of potential growth. Layoffs are always a possibility when the economy is struggling, but continuing education is key in technology as it is always changing.

Eleanor Maria (Ria)’s Answer

In the world of technology, there's a vast landscape of growth and opportunity. Even though layoffs can be worrisome, they often pave the way for fresh prospects. Technology is deeply ingrained in every aspect of life, from personal to commercial, government to independent contracting, and startups. Don't view the tech field as a confined space like data centers. Instead, see it as a platform for constant reinvention and relevance to emerging opportunities as technology evolves. The tech industry offers a myriad of directions you can venture into, and sometimes, layoffs are just indicators of a significant shift in the industry, prompting everyone to adapt and embrace the next big thing, like AI.

If your definition of stability is doing the same thing a decade from now as you're doing today, then tech might not be your cup of tea. This industry demands an insatiable curiosity! However, if you're open to developing and evolving your skills, job opportunities will be plentiful. Or, you could even start your own company to fill a gap in the market!

Robert’s Answer

Different businesses make different investments and bets on how the market and their tech business will handle that. Sometimes those bets pay off and everyone is happy and gets bonuses, sometimes the bets go bad, and there are layoffs. Sometimes the market is just bad, everyone did a good job, and there are still layoffs. It depends. If you keep your skills up to date, and stay networked, a layoff of no fault of yours, will only be a minor speed bump.

Julie’s Answer

tldr: So far in 2023? ~183K people (per crunchbase); the technology field is pretty stable because most businesses run on technology.

Longer: "technology" describes a lot of different jobs, and layoffs usually affects certain jobs, functionalities, teams within the company.
If you're interested in the outlook for a specific type of role, technical skill, etc, please share more details.

If you're worried about potentially being laid off, that's fair (especially given the current economy and layoffs recently). One of the best ways I've found to maintain my confidence is to keep learning. I read articles, follow content creators, & take courses online. You don't always have to learn about only what your current job is. You can learn about other technology too.

Example: Your job may focus on developing your company's app for the Apple store. You could learn more about:
A) how to code new functionality for the apple app you're already developing (directly related to current job)
B) building apps for Google Play or for gaming console stores like Playstation or Xbox (similar to current job)
C) large language models or machine learning algorithms (helps build your overall technical POV, understanding, & skill set)

Having more information won't reduce the fear of uncertainty, but it will help you navigate uncertainty with more confidence.

R’s Answer

Hi Liam,

The downtrend of manpower in the technology field along with layoff's has affected a lot of people. Your question itself reflects that you've been keeping abreast of the developments related to this for the past few months / close to a year. While it's not possible to provide an exact number, the fact remains that it could be a substantial number (perhaps in millions). However, the good news is that things are looking up slowly and gradually.

On another note, given that you are perhaps at the stage where you'll be starting your career or are thinking to do so in the near future, focus on your core strengths and your interests and do some research on what are the most stable roles in your line of interest / field. Even during a downturn, there are certain roles that always remain in-trend and are considered as 'critical'. Focusing on those roles, the path to reach them, and the ways to keep oneself relevant matter in such situations. Playing to one's strengths and upgrading knowledge and skills is one of the surest ways of keeping oneself stable. Also, it's a good idea to be multi-skilled incase you need to fallback on a different trade altogether.

Stability is not about being in one place and role, but having the ability to play to your varied strengths and make well thought out changes when necessary in today's times.

While layoffs do occur, and I'm an example, the need for technologists in the computer industry remains evergreen with new opportunities arising all the time. I recommend putting your concerns aside and focus on the great aspects of the industry, instead.

Pablo’s Answer

Downturn impacts all fields, not just technology, and sometimes layoffs are part of it. Tech is 'flashier' so you hear it more in the news, but it is definitely not a unique problem for the field. At the end of the day, whatever field you go into, you must enjoy it. You are going to spend decades working in it.

Susan’s Answer

Tech skills are always in high demand, and not just in tech-focused companies. By developing your technical abilities, you're not only setting yourself up for a career in tech, but you're also opening doors in all sorts of industries, even in small startups. In my opinion, it's one of the top career choices you could make. But remember, the opposite is also true. If you're more into people skills, like communication, marketing, or sales, you can still find a place in a tech company. So, don't worry if you're not super tech-savvy!

Edwin Anthony’s Answer

Stability exists on multiple levels and is subjectively defined based on individual needs such as a steady income, job satisfaction, or a stress-free work environment. In the current era of the information technology revolution, long-term stability isn't necessarily a sought-after attribute. Instead, continuous evolution in your chosen field or passion can provide lifelong stability. Remember, the only constant is change. Erica’s Answer

Technology is one of the more stable fields because you can utilize more transferable skills. Don't be afraid to be laid off. You can always find another job. Layoffs happen in any field.

While you are working be sure to embrace new things, enhance your skill set, and have a growth mindset. It's okay to fail. Just know that failure does not define who you are.
