Guess who had to dig out her college transcripts to answer this question ? Yes, I did !
Here is the run down : First Semester: 11 units of credit, Summer Semester: 2 units of credit, Second Semester: 15 units of credit, Third Semester: 12 units of credit, Fourth Semester: 14 units of credit, Fifth Semester: 10 units of credit, Sixth Semester:12 units of credit, Seventh Semester: 12 units of credit, Eighth Semester: 15 units of credit Ninth Semester: 18 units of credit. I hope I typed that out correctly.
If you are confused as to how to coordinate your courses, try to blend the intense demanding courses with a couple of less demanding courses each semester. I used to intersperse my general required courses with my major courses. I enjoyed most all of my required general courses and they didn't seem all that demanding, so it worked out well for me. I also took a summer class as well as one evening course to lighten things up a little. You just need to be sure to not take a load of courses that demand a lot of lab hours all in one semester. Read the course descriptions of your major courses and the general ed required courses and that will help you figure it out. As you can see, my course load greatly varied from semester to semester and I had to be careful to mix the courses in a way that was doable. After you find out the requirements of your intended courses, you will be able to understand what will work for you. I had to be super careful because my major required lots of lab hours plus many practicums which had to be done at night.
Best wishes in all you do !

At my college, almost all courses were 4 credits, so almost everyone took 4 classes per semester for a total of 16 credits. I think you actually needed to get approval to go beyond 18 or 20 credits per semester. At most colleges, most courses are 3 credits, so students will more commonly take 5 courses per semester.
