What exactly can you do with a Public Relations Major?

I am a junior in high school and am trying to open my possibilities for what I can Major in in College. I love public speaking and currently do high school Forensics. I was also considering majoring in Theater as well but i feel like my opportunities will be limited with this degree. I am not sure exactly what I want to do with my career but I most definitely want it to have to do with public speaking. #theatre #actor #theater #public-relations #public-speaking

If you're interested in public speaking, you'd likely do well with a PR, Speech/Comm, or Mass Communications major. Some of the most obvious career paths would be in marketing, doing PR for corporations or other organizations, or politics/government work. There's potential to move into law, training, or teaching as well. In your college search, dive into some of the different programs and see what might be a good fit for your talents and passion. Connect with professors or advisors in those departments, and that will be a great way to start seeing some of the careers that program has launched.

While Theatre is not at all a major that limits you, you may not enjoy it quite as much if you're not into the technical/non-performing side of theatre.

Honestly, at this point, knowing something that you love to do puts you in a great position. There's lots of career paths open to you, you just have to try things out and see what works!

Thank you comment icon Thank you so much Jenny, I will definitely take all of this into consideration! :) Aalayah

Generally speaking, the direction of graduate employment can be divided into three categories:
The first category is the public relations and propaganda departments of enterprises and institutions, non-profit organizations, the government and so on.
The second category is professional public relations.
The third category is in the media industry, such as advertising companies, publishing houses, television stations, newspapers and magazines and so on. This direction is especially suitable for students in the direction of Strategic Public Relation, Public Relation, which are biased toward the mass media.

A degree in PR can also lead to a career in fundraising. It is infinitely helpful, as you're sharing the story of the organization that you're working for, much like you would be working in PR for a for-profit company. Something to think about - if theatre is your passion - lots of theatres are non-profit organizations who need help telling their story to secure funding to keep their doors open, put on productions, and train young people in the arts.
