Hailey’s Answer

I always wanted to be a nurse growing up. I never really wanted to do anything else. When I really think about it, I think it was taking care of my grandfather who was a diabetic. He would let me stick his finger to check his blood sugar and let me give him is insulin shots. This had a great effect on me and led to my wanting to take care of others.

Marlena’s Answer

So many different reasons for me BUT! Typically there is an event somewhere in your past that triggers a spark of the desire to want to help others. For me, it was my grandpa. He was an alcoholic, in and out of rehabs but he had a library full of nothing but medical and law books. He made me read from them every time I was there and said, be a lawyer, nurse, or doctor! He then got cancer, watched him go through chemo, radiation, ended up losing his tongue, part of his jaw, lips, etc. He had a tracheostomy (yet continued to smoke through it cause he was gonna die happy on his own terms). Seeing all he went through, good and bad doctors, nurses, treatments, sparked that light in me, that desire to help others, how i wanted to be and how i didnt want to bed! I became a cna, found myself as a single mother, and I wanted to care for people, but be able to provide for my family at the same time. Luckily my parents were very supportive, watched my daughter through nursing school vs day care, and continued on from there. 4 kids later, 21 years as a nurse, married now for 20 years, have my doctorate, now pursuing my psychiatric mental health NP :-)
Nursing isn't for everyone, it's hard work for the money, lots of responsibility, stress, happiness, sadness, but if your heart is in it, you always go home knowing you helped make a difference in at least one person's life :-) that makes it all worth it!

Adn program
Bsn program
Bedside nursing
Areas of nursing practice

James Constantine’s Answer

Hey there, Ashley!

Let's take a little trip down memory lane to 1986, when I first felt the pull towards becoming a dietitian-nutritionist. You see, I was teaching therapeutic dietetics to budding nurses at our local community college in 1994, and I realized something. The same spark that's drawing you towards nursing - the joy of helping others - was calling to me too! It was so strong that I decided to swap my studies in astrophysics and astronomy for a dive into the fascinating world of medical biochemistry and nutrition.

Funny story, I might have ended up as a nurse myself if I hadn't stumbled upon Doctor Paavo Airola's insightful book "Are You Confused?" back in 1976. It was a game-changer for me! But what really pushed me towards nutrition was the untimely passing of my dear Greek relatives. Fast forward to now, with a Bachelor's degree and three postgraduate diplomas under my belt, here I am, ready to make a difference!

Take care and stay blessed!
James.
