In my view, the cornerstone of nursing is compassion. It's the fuel that drives this noble profession. Without a heart full of empathy for every individual, exhaustion may set in swiftly, hindering your success in nursing. Remember, you'll often meet people on their darkest days, when fear overshadows their actions and words, making it challenging to maintain compassion. But if you keep in mind that everyone has a unique story and personal circumstances unknown to you, judgment has no place.

Dear Ashley,
Thanks for asking this beautiful question. You certainly need to have the technical education from nursing school to become a nurse, but I am telling you that the most important skills are to exercise empathy, kindness and compassion for ALL patients that you treat. As a nurse, you will probably see a lot of different people with varying backgrounds, experiences and cultures and you must treat every single person with the dignity and honor they deserve. Sadly, some people in the medical field do not have these skills and it's horrible and actually harmful for the patients. So please, keep these important skills in mind as you become a nurse...or in any profession you are interested in.
All the best,
Melanie
