Alan’s Answer

Prawn, ordinarily I'd say that "good" is in the eye of the beholder. I taught at a community college and thought that many of my colleagues were as good or better than many of the professors at the colleges you refer to. Plus, we had smaller classes and our professors weren't tied up with publishing responsibilities that take time away from students. So, if you're asking about a "good" education, look open-mindedly at the programs and student evaluations of a variety of colleges, along with the specifics that U.S. News pointed out, but not restricting yourself just to "reputation." Go where you think you'll be comfortable, considering class size, location, environment, etc. However (and this is a big however), there are certain professions, snobby as it might be, that look for top ranked colleges on an applicant's resume. I'm thinking of medicine, law and finance particularly. For most careers, though, the impressiveness factor is at best only one of many criteria that would be considered.

Raya’s Answer

This is a very good question Prawn.

Good colleges or the highly ranked colleges have important factors to consider, here are some:

1. The year they have been established; which reflects the experience the student will gain
2. The faculty and courses specialization the college would be known for, with the majors and minors
3. The level of professors who will be teaching at the college
4. The networking aspect that you will gain from the class mates and the alumni system the college provides
5. The connection the college would have with organizations in preparation to integrate students in internships and career paths

Hope these help.

deborah’s Answer

Hello Prawn! I think it is great that you want to understand if there are any advantages to top college rankings.

Top ranked colleges typically have lots of resources and companies are actively recruiting graduates from them. They are very competitive, so you’ll be among some very motivated students.

There are many more good colleges beyond the top 25 — ones that may be much better in a particular degree or major. So depending on what you want to study, you may not see that “good”
college in that particular overall ranking list.

I would start researching with your end goal in mind. In addition to internet research, talk to their advisors, graduates, etc. I’m addition to academics, think about what experiences and supports are you looking for while you’re at college.

College expenses have climbed, so doing research is so important so you’ll be employable - doing a job you’ll enjoy - when you graduate.

I hope my answer is helpful to you. Good luck!
