Although you won’t gain any physical nursing skills until you’re a student nurse or practicing nurse, you can do things to help you prepare. Try volunteering at your local hospital. You can also try to volunteer or work at your pediatric office as an office assistant just to gain exposure to that specialty. Some high schools have a CNA (nurse assistant) program. I would highly recommend it because you can gain basic nursing skills like checking vital signs and assisting with activities of daily living for a variety of patients. After high school, you can go to community college and get an ASN degree in 2 years, pass NCLEX, and start practicing as a nurse. You could also go to traditional 4 year college to get your BSN, pass NCLEX, and start practicing. Most hospitals are preferring BSN, however, if you get your ADN most hospitals will reimburse you for obtaining your BSN while working for them.

Sergio A.’s Answer

Practicing kindness and compassion everyday. Most people seeking medical attention are full of emotions, either scared, angry, or both. Being empathetic and patient towards people is one key to becoming a fantastic nurse that can help heal by caring.

I would look into internship programs and volunteering.

Good luck!
