Michele’s Answer

From a personality trait perspective, the key aspects to working in accounting are effort and a willingness to learn. I know from my own career that being the smartest person in the room is not the be-all and end-all. What matters is your willingness to try and go the extra mile.

Michele recommends the following next steps:

One thing to think about if you're considering a career in accounting is to apply for internships. I'd also recommend applying at a number of places so you can get a feel for the work environment and culture

Blake’s Answer

As far as personality traits/skills go I would say the following are important for accountants: problem solving, the ability to prioritize, enjoying working with numbers, and a desire to learn. Accounting laws and the business environment are ever changing, and accountants must adapt to that. You must also enjoy working on a team since you will almost always have other people working with you on a client. Accounting will give you a wide array of career options.

McKenzi’s Answer

Hi Jaleiyah,

First and foremost I would say you have to enjoy accounting before choosing it as a major. Secondly, consider what your longer term goals are. In addition to working for an accounting firm, an accounting degree is a good foundation for law school or owning your own business. If your goals include working for an accounting firm you will generally be required to have your CPA. In order to obtain your CPA you are generally required to have additional classes beyond your bachelors in accounting. Many CPAs enter into programs at their schools to obtain a master's degree while working on additional credits for their CPA exam. Lastly, I would recommend exploring all the various paths you take with accounting. For example, most accountants focus in either tax or audit and from there you can specialize in a certain industry.

Best of luck!
