Where is it possible to shadow an anesthesiologist in Columbus, Ohio, as a 15-year-old? I have been looking at places; however, it does not seem like there are any opportunities near me in Columbus. If someone is willing to help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Enzo,
Here's Your Action Plan to Shadow an Anesthesiologist in Columbus, Ohio at 15
Columbus, Ohio Hospitals
Start your journey by reaching out to local hospitals in Columbus, Ohio. They might offer shadowing opportunities. The key hospitals to contact include:
- The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center
- Nationwide Children’s Hospital
- Mount Carmel Health System
- OhioHealth
Remember, due to COVID-19 and hospital policies, shadowing chances may be restricted or not available. Always check their current policies and availability by contacting them directly.
Columbus, Ohio Medical Schools
Your next step could be to get in touch with the medical schools in Columbus, Ohio. They often have strong ties with local hospitals and clinics, which could lead to shadowing opportunities. The schools to reach out to are:
- The Ohio State University College of Medicine
- Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dublin Campus
Again, make sure to check their current policies and availability by contacting them directly.
Professional Associations
Approach professional bodies like the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists (OSA). They can link you with local anesthesiologists and provide guidance on how to have a successful shadowing experience.
Volunteer Work
Consider volunteering at a local hospital or clinic. While you may not directly shadow an anesthesiologist, you'll gain exposure to the medical field and possibly make connections with healthcare professionals. Plus, it shows your dedication to a healthcare career.
Rules and Regulations
Bear in mind, there could be age restrictions and requirements for shadowing. In Ohio, under-18s need parental consent for medical-related activities, including shadowing. Some hospitals may also require background checks or immunizations for volunteers or shadowing participants. Make sure to research these requirements and get the necessary permissions before pursuing any shadowing opportunities.

Call the Ohio State medical association - I just googled it, osma.org. Tell them you are looking for a doctor to shadow. They may be able to direct you to the county medical society in your area. Then you may find someone. I have to warn you that it's hard for doctors to get "permission" from the hospital to have a student following them around, particularly in a hospital. Hospitals have a lot of rules about patient privacy, etc., it was even hard 20+ years ago when I was a premed college student. You may have better luck with a "private practice" doctor who can have you come to his/her office- they still have to obey medical privacy laws etc. but there is not as much red tape as there would be in a hospital. Anesthesia doctors also work in the outpatient setting (for example pain management doing injections, etc.). I would call your state or county medical societies in Ohio.

You can google cardiologists in your area and call their office and ask if their physicians would be willing to consider having a pre med student shadow for a few days, or reaching out to local hospitals who usually have a volunteer program or a contact info for physicians who have had students shadow before

Hi Enzo, I am not a medical professional but I interned with the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland when I was in law school, at their legal department. I know the Cleveland Clinic offers some shadowing opportunities. Since Columbus is not that far, you may want to check on this. I would recommend going on their website and looking for shadowing opportunities. Also, I congratulate you on your idea to shadow a professional. I think this is a very practical and helpful way to learn about a career!
