Melanie’s Answer

Dear Zara,

Fantastic question, Zara! Let's dive right into it. If you're aiming to become a doctor, your journey will include several stages. First, you'll spend four years in college, followed by another four years in medical school. After that, you'll need to complete a residency program, which could last anywhere from 3 to 7 years, or even longer. If you decide to pursue a fellowship program, your training could extend further.

Being a doctor is challenging because it involves a vast amount of knowledge. You'll need to understand every aspect of the human body, both in its normal state and when it's affected by disease or trauma. This includes learning how medications, illnesses, injuries, and surgeries can impact the body. It's a lot to take in, but the exciting part is that it's incredibly fascinating! Many individuals are drawn to the medical field because it's an intriguing subject to study and, above all, it offers the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives.

I hope this helps you have a better understanding.

Best,
Melanie

Scott’s Answer

Good morning Zara. As Melanie described, becoming a doctor is a long arduous process. It requires you to be among the best students at college in order to be accepted to medical school and then a lot of hard intense work to get through medical school successfully. Post-medical school training is also quite rigorous and requires long hours and hard work. After you get through all of that you then finally become a doctor which still involves a lot of hard work and requires continued lifelong learning. But here's the payoff, you get to work at a job which is amongst the most rewarding, meaningful and satisfying vocations. As a doctor, you can make huge differences in people's lives, literally in some cases saving their lives. There are many different fields of medicine available, each of them offering their own unique opportunities and challenges. If you have an interest in science and health and like the idea of working with people in an extraordinarily meaningful way then take the dive and good luck!
