What are some unique types of photography that earn a lot of money in the photography industry?

I'd like to know if there are any interesting types of photography that are in demand, but not overloaded with other photographers. For example there are a lot of wedding photographers, but maybe the world needs more underwater photographers. What are these types of photography jobs like to be a part of? #photography #diversity

Christopher’s Answer

While there are variances in pay across the industry, generally it is the known quality of the professional that commands the price in photography. The best wedding photographer's in the Pacific Northwest likely are in the $100K-200K range for yearly business. The average wedding photographer in the same area will make a starting kindergarten teacher's salary.

Virtually all niche's in photography are this way, though some are easier to get paying jobs than others, which makes it easier to develop your name/brand to command higher prices.

David’s Answer

Well, the quick answer is; advertising photography pays the most money per assignment. It requires a pretty big investment in gear and studio space is a very competitive environment. I would suggest you explore all of the different ares of photography and settle on the areas that interest you the most. Also, learn how to use a camera and develop a style of photography that emphasizes your unique way of seeing. Being a professional photographer is not just about how much money you can earn. It's a form of personal expression.

My suggestion is focus on the types of photography that you are most interested in. For example, outdoor buildings, nature, or people. Start putting together a portfolio of your work and compare your photos to professional ones. Personally, I love the music industry and I am always reading up on the latest music trends. I research Billboard for the top music charts.

Michael recommends the following next steps:

Next step would be to research what are popular photography trends in a particular field or industry. Personally, if you don't have a passion of some sort, it will show in your results and you may not produce the best product. Focus on you first and let the rest fall into place.
