Does it matter what degree you have when applying for a job in National Security positions?
I want a position within the National Security arena. When my area of interest is in the National Security area I want to either prepare myself for a good career in business, without eliminating myself for a position with either the CIA (National Security) or FBI. #national-security #career #career-choice

The answer to this question depends on what you want to do in National Security. What do you want to do at CIA or FBI? Each agency has everything from HR to Finance/Budget to Legal to Mail Room to Facilities Management to Information Technology to Custodial/Janitorial Services. All of these departments support the agency mission/National Security. Once you figure out exactly what you want to do, you can decide on a college major. I actually used to work at one of the agencies you mentioned, but I worked in Human Resources. My degree is also in Human Resources. You and I may have different career goals, but we both would work in National Security. Makes sense? I hope this helps!

Hey Keith, just for clarification, are these majors you would recommend for someone wanting to get into the field?

Hello, although there are general degrees such as majoring in homeland security studies, terrorism etc., there is no one specific major to recommend. Federal Law Enforcement agencies such as my former agency, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) have direct hire authority, allowing them to focus on identify candidates who meet a specific skill set they may need. Examples of these skill sets could be a specific language, accounting, cyber/coding, or even financial/crypto currencies. There are also different levels of positions such as special agents, analysts, linguists etc. Best of luck!

I know that these were preferred degrees for several of the government agencies in the past, I still think these are very relevant.
