How is the work environment at your company?

I want to make sure that the questions I ask during future interviews are appropriate and informational. I plan on asking these questions when applying for a psychologist position.

These questions could be your stepping stones to success. Feel free to use them if they resonate with you. Remember, there's no hierarchy here.
1) Is this role a fresh addition to the team or am I stepping into someone else's shoes?
2) Could you describe a typical day in this role? What are the regular tasks I'd be handling?
3) Can you share some insights about the company's retention rate?
4) How would you define the company culture? Are there any events like team-building exercises, picnics, or holiday celebrations?
5) Does the company support personal growth and success through opportunities like offsite seminars?
6) How does the company define and measure success?

Remember, a job interview is not a one-sided affair. It's as much about the company discovering if you're the right fit as it is about you determining if the role aligns with your career goals and work-life balance. Don't hesitate to ask situational questions to gain insights into the company's approach to various scenarios. For instance:

1. Could you explain how the team handles vacation time and PTO? Is this something that's encouraged? Have you had the opportunity to take a vacation recently?
2. How does the company acknowledge the hard work and achievements of its employees? Could you share an instance where you recognized or promoted a member of your team?
3. How does the organization and your team specifically encourage professional and personal growth? Have you or any team members participated in any company-sponsored and funded professional or personal development activities?

I trust you'll find this advice beneficial. Wishing you the best of luck!

Holly’s Answer

Hi Gabriela,

Always super important to ask questions during an interview so great job prepping beforehand! Here are some questions I always recommend asking:

Holly recommends the following next steps:

1) What are the KPIs (key performance indicators) of this role?
2) What is your team missing that I could bring to the role?
3) What are some the attributes of your most successful employees?
4) Do you have any hesitations moving me forward in the interview process?
Thank you comment icon I think these 2 questions are the top ones to ask: 2) What is your team missing that I could bring to the role? 3) What are some the attributes of your most successful employees? If you ask about KPI's each company is different and may measure differently. I would only ask this if you have an understanding of a verity of what KPI's are. C Bonomo

MaryAnn’s Answer

Hello! Rather than inquiring, "how is the work environment", why not ask them to share two aspects they adore about their workplace and one or two areas they believe could use some enhancement? Use this approach to gauge how your prospective role might influence the work atmosphere and culture. Are they receptive to alterations? Do they value employee feedback? What transformations have occurred in the last 2-5 years?

Matt’s Answer

Hi Gabriela,

Great question! Awesome job thinking ahead of what to ask an employer during an interview, because as was stated earlier, it's a two-way conversation. It is just as much for you as it is for the employer.

A lot of the questions mentioned in the first two comments are great and I try to focus on just information gathering. Something to consider is researching the company website to learn what you can do online and then use that information to ask questions. This can demonstrate interest in the employer and impress them with your knowledge of the company already!

Here is a good website that talks about questions to ask and some tips to think through: https://www.best-job-interview.com/job-interview-question.html

Wishing you well!

Hi Gabriella! Like previously mentioned in this thread, questions for your interviewer(s) are not only great opportunities to get to know your potential future team, company, and role but also to showcase your strengths as a candidate!

When it comes to crafting your interview questions, I recommend researching what you can about the company, but also spend some time studying the job description in depth and formulating questions that directly reference a responsibility and/or expectation outlined for the role. Your question can build off something there to dig deeper into the scope and job details rather than maybe asking a more commonly asked question of "whats the day to day like?" Bonus points once they answer, you can then speak to how their response potentially aligns with your experience or career motivations.

Asking an engaging and thoughtful question specific to the role showcases your intellectual curiosity, your investment and interest in this specific role, and your overall knowledge around what it takes.

Hope this helps and best of luck!
