Soumya’s Answer

Thanks for the question. Congratulations on getting to the college. I would prepare a strategy in these directions.

1. Freshman Year: Focus on having a good GPA and decide which specific engineering discipline is your interest. Attend the call outs for student organizations in Robotics and be a member. Always speak to the career development center reps. and attend as many events as sponsored by companies in the domain of robotics; build networks.
2. Sophomore Year: Now you are in your major interests, try building up your core skills which are needed for the jobs. Select a couple of student orgs and start being an active contributor and connect skills gained in the classroom to the activities/practical skills in clubs. Continue networking and connecting to alumni of your college in companies of interest. Start with a wider bracket of companies.
3. Junior Year: As you are building up/maturing in your career, focus on landing an internship (at least a Summer or a 6 month or 8 month or 2 internships spanning 6-8 months ). From the start of the year, ensure that you have a singular focus on landing an internship. Keep networking and understand where you stand. If possible, move to a senior role in a student org.
4. Senior Year: Coming back from the internship, focus on your senior design project in robotics. It can be a research project as well but be very careful in choosing the topic and associated mentor so that you know what you are signing up for. Also, prepare for job applications!
Thank you comment icon This is great general advice for the student to consider while planning. Do you have any suggestions for companies the student should consider when thinking about life after college? Gurpreet Lally, Admin

You will a wide range of industry sectors that have a need for Robotic applications. Health ( remote medicine, diagnostics etc), Automotive (automated assembly, autonomous driving by companies like Tesla), Logistics (automated and/or autonomous delivery like drones and delivery bots by companies like StarShips etc), Space equipment etc. depending on your field of expertise within Robotics and your interests - you can find companies in the related space. All the very best!

Leonardo’s Answer

Definitely, I am an industrial engineer and i see a lot of expansion in Robotics. You could focus on assembly line robotics or go into the gadget development world. There is a lot of growth in general automation.

Leonardo recommends the following next steps:

My suggestion for you would be to investigate what kind of field within Robotics you have more interest in and research for the biggest companies in those fields. There is probably a lot of buzz around it on the east and west coast and maybe not so much in the central states.
