Why did you become an engineer?

I am a civil engineering student, but I would be grateful for an answer from other fields of engineering as well. What made you choose engineering, and what made you decide to stick onto it throughout college and even after college? What was your terribly strong and persistent reason that made you held onto engineering for so long, without quitting at all? I am curious :)

Peter’s Answer

Hello, Cleo. I entered Engineering because I was very interested in Water Resources. The first Earth Day happened while I was in College and I became very interested in the Environment. I graduated with a degree in Molecular Biology, worked a couple of years in a Microbiology Lab, and then entered graduate school to get an MS in Civil Engineering. All during this time, and during the ensuing 40+ years of my career, I was highly motivated by my keen interest in all things Water Resources. My background and knowledge in Hydrology, gained in graduate school and during my career, propelled me forward.

I hope you are able to find a similar passion to drive your career.

Good Luck, Pete Sturtevant PE

Simon’s Answer

I have always been interested in designing things, fixing things and making things better. Before going back to college, I was involved in drafting, designing circuit boards for a medical instrument company and making restaurant equipment. I eventually found my way into a piping designer position for a chemical company when I was going to night school. They promoted me in engineering and maintenance positions throughout my 35 year career. It took me 15 years to get my mechanical engineering degree going to night school and never looked back. I have never regretted my choice of careers. Find any area you are interested in and you will find a career you will enjoy.
