What would be the most difficult unit to work in in a children’s hospital?

I know that it will be hard to see children in pain while working in a hospital, but what units would be the most challenging to deal with? #nursing #workinginahospital

Haylei’s Answer

It depends on what you find to be emotionally difficult and how you view your job. Many nurses I know say peds psych because almost all of the patients have extensive training histories, but I love peds psych because I always leave work feeling like I made a difference for my patients. ER gets a lot of peds psych and abuse. ICU, hospice, and hem/onc see a lot of patients pass away, but also have a benefit of really getting to form strong relationships with patients and families. Med-surg and progressive care can be difficult because ratios can be high leaving you constantly running around and not having a lot of time with patients and their families. NICU was the most difficult for me because almost all of the patients were struggling with neonatal abstinence syndrome without their parents present- stressful and sad. I highly encourage you to shadow because it really depends on your personality and views. Good luck and know that peds nursing is awesome!
