Richard’s Answer

What happens after college depends on what you study. If you do not know this yet, I would strongly recommend figuring it out by getting real-world experience while you narrow it down by researching different opportunities and getting first-hand experience in things you're interested in. For example, if you think you might be interested in medicine, shadow different people in the healthcare field, like physicians and nurses.

Once you've decided what you want to study, talk to professionals in the field for guidance to decide which opportunity to pursue.

That is no problem. As long as you are committed to getting a degree and then committing to finding and working hard in a job after college, it will work out. You can start shadowing (or interning with) professionals who work in jobs you may be interested in.

Jacob’s Answer

Hi, Chanvichheka. That is a really common question people getting ready to go to or graduate from college have. In fact, I think many young professionals struggle with their long term career decisions too - I certainly have. Really, the best way to determine whether a career is suitable for you is to go out and do it. I realize that is not always possible but exploring short internships is a good solution. Even if an employer doesn't explicitly state that it is looking for interns, you could still reach out to see if they would be willing to bring you on for a few weeks to help out. It's worth a try.

You can also try to involve yourself with projects in school that are similar to a future career. For example, if you were interested in financial planning, I would imagine there is an invest club or finance club at your school. If there isn't, why not talk to a faculty member and start one? If you are interested in working for the Center for Disease Control, get in touch with a biology professor who does similar research and see if you can help in any way. The options for career exploration are bountiful - you just have to get creative sometimes.

Before you dive into experimenting with different career options, I recommend thinking about what you actually want to do. Consider careers' impactfulness and your suitability for them. The folks at 80,000 Hours put together an absolutely incredible career guide that I highly recommend reading. I read it and also investigated many of their other articles. The tools and ideas they present are extremely useful and very interesting. The link to the career guide is included below. Hopefully this answer helps point you in the right direction. Good luck!
