In Finance, there are some hard skill/ technical skills that are relevant, but I think the most important skills to learn are soft skills.
Some hard skills include being proficient in Excel and being exposed to new technology (ex. Power BI). Also having some coding background would be helpful. These skills you can learn in college classes or you can take online courses.
Soft skills include communication, assertiveness, time management, detail-oriented. These skills you learn through experience and you can practice in everyday life.

That's a fantastic question! I've just started my journey in the finance sector, and I can confidently say that computer and analytical abilities are crucial. Throughout my university years, I spent a significant amount of time mastering Excel and various other platforms. While they're all beneficial, I've noticed that most firms have their unique methods.
The optimal strategy is to hone your analytical abilities and gain a level of familiarity with a wide range of platforms. Younger employees are often relied upon by businesses to enhance or automate manual tasks and reports. Any additional insights or fresh viewpoints you can provide are always a plus, regardless of the format.
It's essential to understand how to read and interpret various data types so that you can offer that perspective from the get-go. I hope this advice proves useful to you!

Hi Samuel,
Great question! My belief is that SOFT Skills always come before HARD skills. The most important thing that you can do is learning how to communicate with other people, work with others, and nurture a curious mindset. I know these skills can be hard to practice as I had trouble with these myself, but the most important thing I learned was that I had to find my own opportunities to practice, taking advantage of everything from part-time work to group projects in class. The most important opportunity you can unlock for yourself is building a network, whether it's meeting people at career fairs or reaching out to people through LInkedIn or your school's career site.
Yes, people will care if you're able to read financial statements or use Microsoft Excel, but truly good companies will teach you skills that are way more advanced than what you already know, so if you know the foundations, you're going to already be ahead of a lot people hunting for finance jobs! I wish you all the best in your career journey!

If possible, majoring in Finance or another relevant field such as Economics or Accounting is a great way to take relevant classes, learn, and establish credibility as someone looking to work in the field of Finance. The area is so vast with so many different opportunities that you are bound to find something that interests you. The specific skills will vary greatly depending on what area of finance you are in, but networking and knowing others that are in fields that interest you will help greatly. Also soft skills, such as communicating effectively, paying attention to detail, and learning how to write letters/emails will go a very long way.

Hi Samuel!
Thank you for your question! I would say there are many ways to best prepare yourself for a finance job. Prior to any courses or programs in involving finance, I would first recommend becoming proficient in Microsoft Excel. Many financial models and other financial exercises that can be seen on the job require high-use of Excel. This will not only make you more efficient at producing financial information when needed but also show future employers that they can rely on your technical skills as well. Aside from technical skills, it is important to stay up-to-date in current financial markets. You can stay current by reading the Wall Street Journal or New York Times to see how current financial and business problems arise and are solved. Additionally, I would advise to take courses involving investment theory, corporate finance, and financial accounting. By taking a wide array of courses along with the technical skills, you can best prepare your skillset to critically think through any financial problem that comes your way.
Thank you,
Dwight

To make your journey towards a career in finance more effective, it's essential to concentrate on developing core skills, including Math, Logical Reasoning, and Data Interpretation. When selecting your electives in school or college, engage in conversations with your teachers or professors about the classes that will best prepare you for a finance career. Identifying a specific role in finance can be challenging without firsthand experience. Therefore, it's more beneficial to focus on mastering fundamental skills and discovering your interests through a process of trial and error.

Hi Samuel, I would recommend that you work on both technical and soft skills. It would be helpful to be a master in Excel, or other spreadsheet software to better analyze data, which you will be doing a lot of in finance. In terms of soft skills, you should work on communicating ideas and building trust with people you work with. As a finance professional, sometimes you may not be the most popular person and will have to have tough conversations, so being able to do so effectively is crucial to your success.

Hello Samuel,
If you are just starting out, I would recommend gaining a thorough understanding of Microsoft Excel and Financial Modeling as several have already suggested. Also, I would recommend that you begin to follow the markets and follow big deals/macroeconomic events that are affecting the financial markets today.
If you are a bit further down the road, I would recommend actually reaching out and networking with a diverse group of finance professionals. Finance is an incredibly broad field, and so while there is some overlap between skills, the actual work from profession to profession can look quite different. Are you interested in banking? accounting? tax? FP&A? By networking with professionals, you will be able to narrow in your focus and to identify which skills would benefit you the most.
Best of luck as you move towards your career in finance!
