Changing Majors

Entering college as a young adult and with lots of aspirations of what to come ahead, we always come across the option to change their major. What is the difference between a business degree vs. a communications degree in a career perspective?

Hi Rickell

Specifically about changing majors, it is fine to start in one major and the switch if you decide it's not quite for you. College is about learning, including learning about your interests.
If you are not sure, I would suggest talking to your college adviser about this up front and picking classes strategically so they a) transfer between your likely majors and b) give you a good introduction to each so you can be sure. Most programs have a lot of flexibility, so you should have no trouble combining the required studies with the electives that let you explore the other path(s) you are considering.

It all depends on what you want to do after graduation. Business and communication majors are very general. I have seen people studied these majors but work on a completely different field.
Business is very general. You can do accounting, marketing, finance, etc.
Communications can lead you to PR, social media, grant writer, reporter, etc.
I think it all depends on what skills you learn and how you apply in a job.

As my understanding, most colleges' communication program are focusing on helping students create solutions for communication challenges, which bring a broader coverage on career options.  Each industry required some sort of communication skills; even tech job required communications.

For business program, there are so many major you can choose from.   For example, marketing and human resources.   Both major does require good communication skills to be succeed.  However, when in college, business program will cover topics relating to the critical factors to drive a business, the abilities need to effectively running a project, etc.

For career perspective, you will have wider selection to try out which industry you are interested in pursuing as your career via Communication program.  However, if you know which industry you are mostly interested in, I would say business program can provide you a slightly more knowledge and skill sets for your future career.

Good luck!

(Well, maybe you are major one and minor the other one :)

In addition to what has been mentioned, you should have the option to major in one subject and minor in another. So you can learn and take classes regarding both fields.
