what can i do to help myself figure out what i wanna choose as my major?

I’ve always been surrounded by people who have known their whole lives what they want to study and what they type want to do with their lives, but i’ve never been able to figure out what I like and what my skills are. It’s been sort of freaking me out lately because i feel so pressured to choose something, but everything seems so general to me and doesn’t seem to suit me. #college #college-major #academic-advising

Alex’s Answer

I would think about what you want your career to look like after college. Certain majors are going to lead you into certain professions. If you are a finance major, that will likely lead you into more quantitative jobs and you would likely do a lot of work in Microsoft Excel, for example. I suggest talking to some older friends or family members that are already in college - ask them what courses they are taking and what type of work those courses entail. You'll find some majors such as History or Literature require lots of reading, while others like Engineering might require more calculations. Another suggestion would be to talk to your friends parents - understand what their jobs are, and ask them what they studied in college. That might provide some insight into how their education played a role in the job they have today.

Alex recommends the following next steps:

Identify what you'd like your career work to look like
Reach out to people around you to understand the type of work they do, and what their educational process was like to get them where they are!

Raymond’s Answer

This can be a very difficult decision, but remember it does not define you. After my first year at school I changed my major into a completely different field and even after being in the workforce for 10+ years I would argue that I still "don't know what I want to be when I grow up". It is ok to try different things, that is really what school is for. I would advise to take some different general education courses in areas that you may not be familiar with to see if any of them spark your interest. I would also advise in seeking mentors that make you think differently than you normally do, this will challenge you and help you grow.
