If you are awarded a scholarship, are you able to obtain the money before admitted to a school?

When looking at colleges and scholarships, it sometimes says that you will receive the money once you are admitted into the school. I am not sure whether this applies to all scholarships or just the ones the colleges offer?

Ariel,
It will depend on how the scholarship is structured and who awards it. Not all scholarships will be treated the same.
Scholarships through an institution are often awarded after you have accepted their offer, paid deposit, enrolled, and begun attending classes. Scholarships through an organization may be administered by check or cash in a small ceremony such as a meeting.
Awarding scholarships are one way that universities recruit students, so you may receive more than one offer from a variety of schools. With the date of May 1, students are given the opportunity to weigh their options and make the best choice for fit, including financial fit.
I hope this helps!
