Which states are cheap and excellent(strong and competitive) for Mechanical Engineering

I am a student in the US and my major is Mechanical Engineering. I am attending college right now and will be transferring next fall to a 4-year institution. I am looking for a school that is affordable to me and at the same time has strong reputation and accreditation in its Engineering Programs. In other words, it is like an equation or a compromise between cost and quality of education so I am looking for a school/state that possesses those two features together. #education #mechanical-engineering #engineering

Ian’s Answer

Hello Abdalla!

In 2014 I moved to St. Louis, Missouri from New York for a full time role within AT&T. I was extremely pleased by the discounted cost of living in this state. St. Louis has many of the 'bigger city' features, with an incredible small-mid city price. For a recent college grad, I was afforded many opportunities & options I wouldn't have been able to afford in New York City. There are many good engineering schools around the area including Washington University in St Louis, Missouri S&T, Mizzou, etc..

Once you've graduated there are also many Mech-E jobs available around the area with the biggest name being Boeing. I wish you luck in your search and application process!

Simon’s Answer

Hi Abdalla,

I see you are in California. Come east and things are more affordable. There are great schools in the mid-west and the south...some of the most affordable areas in the county. Big cities/metro areas are still more expensive, so if you can handle a short commute you should be fine. Search for state schools in the area you prefer. I have a ME degree from the University of Cincinnati and retired from the Chemical Industry. I have hired great engineers from Iowa, Michigan and Ohio to South Carolina, Texas and Georgia. These same areas have solid industries that are always looking for MEs.

Simon recommends the following next steps:

Investigate areas you would like to live
Search for state schools with Engineering degrees on the web
