Hello, Ade !
When you enroll in college you can take a financial planning course along with your business courses. There are also small schools that offer a diploma or a certificate in financial planning. The best way to discover an understanding of it now is to research on line through a search. Read articles like the one in the link I have left for you below. Search for video presentations about it on You Tube. It will be good to have a basic understanding of it before you go to college.
Once you are ready to apply to college, you may want to return to resources on the internet for more updated financial planning information.
Best wishes to you !

Hi Ade!
I would definitely recommend a personal finance class. Most colleges offer business 101 / intro to business classes that would give you a good overview of business. Some colleges even offer entrepreneurship classes that would cater specifically to your want to run your own business. You could even consider a general business minor in college, which would most likely require you to take accounting, marketing, and finance classes and would give you a well-rounded understanding of business.
Best of luck!

Great question! If you can find a business math course, I felt like what was reviewed in mine was all relevant to the company I started.
You will likely find that there is a basic math requirement for any AA degree. A intro to accounting was tough for me, but if you can’t find a business math course, that might be another way to go.

Hi Ade,
If you are interested in running your own business, you should 100% take a class in basic financial accounting (income statement, balance sheet, cash flows). You can hire someone to actually perform the accounting when you start a business, but you MUST have an understanding of these three main financial statements if you want to make sound decisions as a business owner. As good of an idea a business is, it can only work if the company generates money and is profitable. As the business owner you need to have an understanding of your company's financial situation in order to make the correct decisions.
As a high school student, another helpful class you could take is personal finance if you school offers it. Learning how to correctly manage your own money will translate over to correctly managing your company's money. This is also a topic you do not need to take a class on, search up some videos on youtube or tiktok about some of the personal finance questions you may have. You can often learn more from these videos than your high school business teacher. Having a background on these types of topics will also carry over to college and help in the business classes you plan on taking.
Hope this helps!

Hi Ade,
Both of my daughters were required to take a Personal Finance/Financial Literacy class to graduate high school here in NJ.
I would get with your guidance counselor and see if your school has the same requirement, if not you may wish to look at your local community college for a course in Personal Finance/Financial Literacy.
It is wonderful that you are thinking about this subject, because the better prepared you are once you graduate high school the better off you will be. The class here in NJ includes needed subjects like: Opening a bank account, balancing a check book (old world I know), How to set up & maintain a Budget, general Tax information, etc. The class even gave each student the chance to (in class) Budget/Plan a Wedding, Budget/Rent an Apartment, Plan to open a small business.
Before setting off to college - these simple life skills will be very helpful.
Best regards - Tina

Ade, thank you for having the courage to ask your question. Your early curiosity about financial planning is impressive. To kickstart your journey, consider enrolling in a beginner's class on personal finance. This will help you grasp fundamental ideas like budgeting, saving, and investing, which will prove useful throughout your life.
When my son was in high school, he took a business course that provided him with a basic understanding of financial management. As a freshman, you might want to explore if your school offers a similar course. Reach out to your counselor or browse through your course catalog to find out.
Another approach could be to delve into basic financial literacy or introductory business courses. These will equip you with the essential knowledge needed for sound financial decision-making. You'll find that many colleges offer programs in business administration, finance, or entrepreneurship that align with your future aspirations.
To bolster your understanding of financial concepts, consider taking more math courses throughout high school. As you work towards college, focus on maintaining solid academic performance, participating in extracurricular activities, and seeking internships or part-time jobs in the business and finance sectors.
Your love for English and world cultures can enhance your business education, providing a unique viewpoint. As you chart your academic and career journey, don't hesitate to seek advice from teachers, counselors, and professionals in the field.

Ade - this is great you are starting to think about your future. You should check and see if any of the local colleges will allow you to take a finance course while in high school. My son did this while he was in high school and was able to even get the college credits. Another option is to start reading some personal finance books as well, as this will enable you to be exposed to financial acumen and provide a foundation. In college you can also choose to have a major and a minor, so an option could be to major in Business with a minor in English - giving you the best of both your passions.
I am a firm believer in the youth of today having a strong financial background so they are able to navigate the world of finance, credit cards, debt, etc....so they can set themselves up to be successful adults.
Start by checking with your local colleges and your guidance counselor at school as they might be able to assist you in identifying some viable options. All the best....JP

If you're a high school freshman with an interest in financial planning and a potential future in business, it would be beneficial to consider enrolling in courses like "Personal Finance" or "Financial Literacy." These courses aim to equip you with vital skills and knowledge required for managing personal finances, comprehending investments, and making informed financial choices.
Moreover, once you transition into college, it would be advantageous to delve into business and finance-related courses. Introductory subjects such as accounting, finance, or business management are worth exploring. These classes can lay a robust foundation for understanding essential concepts that will prove invaluable if you opt to establish your own business someday.
In addition, think about participating in business-oriented clubs or societies during your high school and college years. These can provide networking opportunities and a more profound comprehension of the business world. Engaging in extracurricular activities like entrepreneurship clubs or finance-centric competitions can also boost your practical skills and introduce you to real-life situations.

Lastly, seize opportunities for internships or part-time roles in business-associated fields to acquire hands-on experience and further explore your interests.

Hello! Great question. Learning about personal finance in high school will not only set up to have great life skills but also help you understand the topic going into college.
I recommend joining a business club in high school, like DECA or Business Professional of America.
You can also look up a finance class on an online learning platform. I found a personal finance class for teenagers on Udemy for $17. You likely can find content on YouTube or TikTok as well but make sure that you are validating the source of the content as a reputable source. Typical financial advisors who give advice on social media will make sure to explain that they are legally obligated to give advice in their client's best interest.
You might also talk to your parents about opening up a banking account from a Bank that has checking/savings for teenagers. They will likely also have great resources to learn the basics of personal finance.
My last suggestion is to find a mock stock market investing game. There are sometimes clubs in high school that facilitate this but you could also find a game online that would let you learn in an interactive way.
Spending your time learning is always worthwhile!

Hello Ade! I appreciate that you are thinking ahead and preparing for your future.
Many high schools offer personal financial planning and business classes. I suggest you start there. And, Some schools also offer college businesses classes in high school when you are a junior or senior. Classes such as business, marketing, accounting, etc.
If you high school does not offer personal financial planning, there are some free online courses. See link for Khan Academy.
I suggest also joining a business-related club at the school, if this is possible for you. FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and/or DECA, or similar club, may be available at your high school.
