When applying for an internship, try to show ways in which you've been productive and a team player. Any kind of club or work experience will be helpful in showing that you know how to take instructions from others and contribute to a team effort. Companies want to know that you'll get along well with others and do well in a team setting.

Hi Brandon,

The best way to stand out in an application for an internship is to participate in activities or have prior experience related to the job you are applying for. For example, if you want to apply for an internship in Marketing, you could do marketing for a club at school. Anything that shows that you are interested in the field and gives you skills that you could apply to the job can help you to stand out.

Always find out more information about the company, their values etc and in the application/cover letter clearly state what skills, values, character traits or experience you have which would be relevant to that particular role – why would you be suitable for the role? Make the letter short, succinct and sharp – nothing too long.
Do you have any volunteering experience? Any special interests, skills, achievements from these? Usually hiring managers like someone who is passionate about something, preferably something that is unique.

Make sure you are competitive on your GPA, and are taking classes that will be helpful for the job you would be applying. Make sure you go talk to the HR, the more your face appear the better the chances you will have to be remembered, so that when the HR see your resume, they see you as a person, not a piece of paper.

Hi Brandon, great question! There are several things I paid attention to while applying for an internship. The first was my resume. I made sure that I not only tailored my resume to the specific application, but I also thoroughly reviewed my resume. Believe it or not, many applicants forget to double check their resumes for errors. If you are in doubt about the quality of your resume, i'll suggest getting it checked by your school's career center or a professional. Organizations and extra curricular activities also look good on your resume. This is because it shows that you can handle multiple responsibilities. Also, I would advise you to use many facts and figures in your resume.

Another way to stand out in your application is through your cover letter. Make sure you tailor your cover letter to the internship you are applying for. If you are unsure about how to tailor your cover letter, look at the internship posting and read the description. Most companies give specific details about the skills and experience required for the internship. I hope this helps. Good luck on your search!
