What is the best way for a teacher to approach a student who doesn't have encouragement inside or out of the classroom?
I ask this question because I am from the south side of Chicago, Illinois and I have seen many students going through school with little or no encouragement to grow and become better. I plan on becoming a teacher and teaching on the south side where there is a high chance I will face this issue, and I need to know the best way to deal with this to help my children.

I commend you for wanting to give back to your community. My advice (and the motto that I personally follow as well) is this:
"Become the person that you needed when you were younger".
Educators are underappreciated, but so important to building community and lives in youths. Truly- I wish you success!

Look into restorative practices and restorative discipline. You need to have a relationship with the student for the student to become invested in your class (if they aren't inherently). Build a network of support inside the school and slowly bring the family along.

It is important to build rapport with the student, as well as a relationship in which case the student will feel comfortable in your classroom. In doing this, I say set the expectations, but make the learning experience engaging. Present various resources and activities that make learning the various subject matters entertaining.
