Luke’s Answer

For many, the hardest part of going away for college includes:

1.) Missing out on things their family / friends back home are doing.

2.) Being away from "comfortable and familiar" surroundings.

3.) Giving up dependency on family.

Despite the negatives, there are certainly some positives to leaving your home state as it enables you to develop independence and grow in many ways as a person. The only person capable of making the decision is you, but be sure to consult loved and trusted ones during your decision making process. Also, be sure to run the finances of the decision, as often moving away comes with transportation/housing/random expenses that should be understood prior to embarking on the journey.

Pamela’s Answer

Some of the challenges to going away to school include periods of loneliness, feelings of not belonging, hard time meeting friends, homesickness. These challenges may seem scary, but they usually correct themselves by 2nd semester of freshman year. But the rewards are learning to take care of your daily needs, meeting new friends from other backgrounds, and the excitement of learning new things. These highs and lows are experienced by ALL new college students.

Neha’s Answer

Learning how to do things on your own! Going away is definitely the first and biggest possible push out of the nest. Taking care of yourself is the most important thing but also the most overlooked. Make sure you take care of yourself mentally, physically and emotionally.
