How long does it take the average person to find their career?

I feel as though I have decided on my professional career late in my life. I wish I was able to find out what I wanted to do sooner on rather than just now. When do most people find out what they want to do? #career #life

Fola’s Answer

Hi Tristan,

It's always great to be reflective but remember it isn't about how long, but how well. Colonel Sanders (founder - Kentucky Fried Chicken), started his business after the age of 40. People change careers all the time. I won't say it is easy, but it is certainly possible. So think about what you are passionate about, what you will do happily even if you weren't getting paid, what will make you jump out of bed in the morning. Once you figure it out go for it - and like i said, it's never too late!

Simeon’s Answer

If I had to guess, most people start to get a better idea of what career options suit them within 5 years of graduating. If you have the ability to land an entry level job and try out a few options you've considered, you'll understand a lot better what options you prefer.

Krista’s Answer

Most people will never find 'their job' because they're stuck in 'scare city'. Finding your job is really a matter of understanding your motive, why do you do what you do. What do you love about it. Does your company share your why. Finding your why is the only path to finding the job you'll love. Knowing what makes you happy, inspires you and will give you fulfillment.

Krista recommends the following next steps:

There is this great Ted talk from Simon Sinek about your why, you might find it inspiring

Paul A’s Answer

Hi Tristan! You are wise to begin asking questions. Finding out what you want to do maybe less important then discovering what your gifts, talents, interests and passions are. Most people never have careers because they bog down in jobs, have a family and become trapped in "life styles" they have to support. 71% of the population can't write a check for $1,000, 7 out of 10 people hate their jobs. The bigger question might be what are my interests, talents, gifts and passions and what major guides me best in that directions. Doing and taking action before becoming more self aware leads to a lot of dead ends. The best on your journey! :-)

Christine’s Answer

Career Exploration should start in gradeschool. Career days when parents and other adults come to school and talk about their careers experience and preparation are very helpful in exposing youmy student to different possibilities.
However students should keep an open mind and exp!it's many subjects to be able to find possible carrers. E very volunteer and job experience should help to identify strengths and interests as well as dislikes and difficulties.
There is no set time, but being aware and open to information experience and opportunities will help you in making the right choice based on information you have personally gathered for yourself. Be patient you will narrow down the fields. But be related for some surprising developments!
