If I want to have a career in art therapy should major in art or psychology?

I am an artist and want to a career in therapy. I am pretty excited to think that I could combine the two and be an art therapist. I don't know whether to major in art with a minor in psychology or major in psychology with a minor in art. #art-therapy

Hello. Great question. You can major in psychology and have art as a minor for undergrad. There are several grad programs that have mental health specialization in art therapy such ad the grad school I attended Adler University. I would look into that. Doing a counseling program then specializing in art therapy will provide you with the tools to practice as a counselor and still provide art expressive work. Overall, any counselor can provide art therapy as long as it is intentional for the clients progress for change.
Think about your purpose and how it's important for your profession. Even if you do not choose to go into art and just therapy, there are continuous education options with things such as " expressive art" that you can study up on for your license renewal.
Hope this helps!

You should look at schools that offer art therapy first and then minor in Psych or Art to back it up. Majoring in art to decide if that's what you really want to pursue would be a good path....
