What are the benefits of a BFA versus a BA?

Will professionals really regard a BFA higher than a BA? Some of the schools I'm interested in don't offer a BFA. #performing-arts

BFA is a Bachelors in FINE arts where the concentrations are heavy in the actual art history and applications as well as studio arts.

A BA is in the liberal arts and usually focuses on the general education with a concentration in a particular area of study.

If you're after performing arts it would likely be a BA at most schools with a concentration in PA, however since there are so many schools it's really a matter of which school and the program accreditation. I wouldn't suggest a BFA for performing arts unless the particular college structures the educational program for PA under a BFA.

Hi Katie!

Great question, I had the same one when I was in college!

For the most part a BFA just has different requirements than a BA, usually you will be required to complete studio hours. You can get a BFA or a BA in performing arts, it really all depends on the program at the college you're attending. I personally haven't seen any benefits or negatives to either career wise, but it's an important choice as it will define the kinds of classes you're focused on during school.
