Hi Naman,

It depends on the course you are going to take. Some online programs are accredited which means they can be accepted the same way as off-line ones. Also, if you think online is not so credible, why you should do both the online and off-line courses? In that case, do the in-person course only I think.

Sahida’s Answer

The BSc program in Data Science at IIT Madras is a four-year full-time course conducted entirely online. Unlike the traditional BSc program, this online version does not require candidates to pass the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Instead, participants are granted access to four weeks of online classes, and continuation is based on the results of a qualifying exam.

Eligibility for the program is based on passing Std XII in any stream, making it accessible to students from commerce, arts, science, law, medicine, engineering, and other backgrounds. The course structure includes three stages: Foundation, Diploma, and Degree, allowing students to earn a certificate, two diplomas, or a BSc degree, respectively.

This degree course welcomes students already enrolled in another degree program, high school graduates, and working professionals. Top-performing students receive placement support and soft skills training. Additionally, opportunities for collaboration with IITM faculty on research projects are extended to students. IITM has a dedicated placement cell for online BSc students, offering placement assistance and career guidance.

Enrolling in this program provides the opportunity to associate with the prestigious IIT brand. If considering doing an offline B.Tech, ensure that the course aligns with the field of data science. Proper planning is crucial to manage both exams and align your educational path with your career goals.

Embrace the unique opportunity:

No JEE barrier: Unlike traditional B.Sc. programs, this course allows anyone with a 12th-grade pass, regardless of stream, to enter the world of data science. This removes a potentially daunting hurdle for those passionate about the field but lacking traditional technical preparation.
Flexible and accessible: As an online program, it caters to diverse needs and schedules. You can pursue your data science aspirations while managing other commitments, like work or existing studies. This flexibility could be game-changing for many aspirants.
Top-notch faculty and content: Learning from IIT Madras's renowned faculty through high-quality online content offers an unparalleled academic experience. You gain access to a world-class education even if geographical constraints or other circumstances prevent you from attending on-campus programs.

Consider the trade-offs:

Self-driven learning: Online learning demands strong self-discipline and time management skills. Success relies heavily on your ability to stay motivated and focused without the traditional classroom environment.
Networking limitations: Building the same level of peer network and industry connections as an on-campus program might be more challenging. However, the program offers dedicated placement support and research collaboration opportunities to minimize this gap.
Degree recognition: While the program is accredited, some employers might initially hold reservations about online degrees. However, the growing demand for data science skills and IIT Madras's reputation can help bridge this gap over time.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your individual circumstances and priorities:

If you crave flexibility, accessibility, and a chance to jumpstart your data science journey irrespective of your background, this program could be ideal. If peer interaction, campus life, and established degree recognition are top priorities, an on-campus program might be a better fit.

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Naman !

You are asking whether or not you should go for two college degrees at once. No. I would not recommend that. Again, there are many decisions that you are going to have to make and you do not have to rush this decision while you are still in 11th grade. If you feel that your calling is definitely for Data Science, explore one thing at a time. You have already expressed a sincere interest in Data Science more than once. You may not realize just yet how demanding it is to go to college for one degree. Your time, financials and focus will be centered on classroom attendance, classroom lectures and instruction, projects that have a deadline, written reports and participation in class. You will be expected to fulfill all of this in order to get your degree. And I do advise doing a degree in person. Find a college that offers a degree in Data or Information Science. But you must focus on one commitment to one subject/major in college due to time constraints. You seem to have a noble career plan ahead of you already but may be overthinking things a bit, so keep asking questions and know that we base it on experience that you have not yet had. We are happy to help out.

Getting a degree on line is totally a choice that you will have to make based on obtaining more awareness of how the companies regard on line degrees compared to in person degrees. If you go to college on campus, you will definitely meet a network of people that can help you in your career or other students that you can collaborate with on projects. The in-person experience is more beneficial for that reason and will also greatly help you with communication skills and a social network of new friends. You may have opportunities in your field of work that you might not ordinarily have with an on-line experience. This is just based on my observations but you can do what you feel most comfortable with. I do want to stress that right now, you should be focused and concentrating on making the most of your high school years, both academically with good grades and socially with extracurriculars. I have a feeling that you may change your mind about a career plan several more times and that is perfectly fine, but for now, your plans for college can be considered, but I advise that the here and now is very important for what happens later down the line.
