Ashley’s Answer

Hey Kristina! I am currently an alumni of Temple University's journalism program. I would suggest signing up for general job boards such as Indeed and WayUp for finding jobs and internships as they allow you to see what is available in journalism. I would also check out job boards such as Ed2010, which is a website geared specifically towards magazine jobs and internships. Talk to other students in your classes and see what kind of internships they've had- I found out about an internship through a classmate and was able to tell my supervisor that I knew her, which helped me get the position. Don't hesitate to take something unpaid.

I am currently interning at Society19, which is an online magazine, and I'm getting a ton of great clips. I have also written for The Odyssey. Many editors are looking for students who have writing samples, so these are great ways to get some beyond the classroom setting.

In terms of extracurriculars, get involved with student media. See if your college has a magazine, be it a print or digital mag. If not, you can start one, or join the school newspaper, specifically the features section since that's closest to magazine writing. Also, consider joining the Society of Professional Journalists. It looks great on your resume and they have a job board. They have a student rate that is less than their regular membership.

Best of luck!

Ashley recommends the following next steps:

Look on WayUp, Indeed, and Ed2010 for jobs
Join a campus media platform to build clips
Consider joining the Society of Professional Journalists
Write for The Odyssey or Society19 to get clips

Ralph’s Answer

Hi Kristina,

Great question. As you are aware, this is a pivotal time in your career, even though you're still in school. An editor who was on my team was part of an organization called Her Campus Media, and I believe they have a presence in a number of schools. https://www.hercampusmedia.com/. Also, check out sites such as mediabistro.com and even the Freelancers Union. You can sign up free for both of these sites, and I think they do have internship postings

Ralph recommends the following next steps:

HerCampusMedia: https://www.hercampusmedia.com/
Mediabistro: http://mediabistro.com
Freelancers Union: https://www.freelancersunion.org/
