How should you go about getting a job after graduation if you have no work experience?

You can't include work experience/history or applications or resumes if you don't have any, so what do you do instead? How does this affect your application process when you're looking for a career?

Stephanie’s Answer

Hi Kristin! This was the exact same question I had when I graduated too! I found that having experience with the following helped me stand out:

Essentially, any skills that may put you in the spotlight and help you shine when someone comes across your resume. If you're savvy in HTML, Photoshop, bringing large groups together and organizing people. These are skills which you can highlight and put on a resume. I hope this helps!

Stephanie

Stephanie recommends the following next steps:

Internships
Student association programs - for example, Key Club or Toastmasters
Business associations - AITP (Association of IT Professionals)
Any awards you may have gotten in school

Jessica’s Answer

Depending on where you live, there are probably many different opportunities to help gain that experience. In Indiana, we have a great opportunity called a Work Experience to help Young Adults gain experience in the field of choice for his or her career. It is like a paid internship that is paid through our Workforce Development funding. If you do not have this program, there are a lot of websites that provide paid and unpaid interships as well. If you have the opportunity to participate in a Work Experience that is career oriented, I would highly suggest going that route! Good luck!

Hope’s Answer

Hi, Kristin.
Consider the great things you’ve done in the past, that you may not have considered work experience before. These may be great resume builders. For example, what volunteer opportunities have you been Involved? What skills have you used in different school groups? What are things you’ve noticed you helped friends and family? What are some wonderful awards you’ve won? Allow the format of your resume to focus on your skills and less on the employer.
Hope this helps!

If you are a recent grad with no job experience, I would highly recommend trying temp services. This will allow you to build your resume and also work different job until you find the one you want.
Keep in mind your life experiences can be used on your resume for example if you babysit you can apply for daycare and use your examples from babysitting in the interview.

Keep in mind you probably have a lot on contacts from collage so start
networking is the No. 1 most powerful job hunting strategy out there.
