How do I find internships (eventually a career) in a different city?

I’ve live in Southern California my entire life and I really want to move to another city after I graduate, but I’ll need a job. What are some tips on getting an internship/career in a city that’s farther away?

Thank you comment icon Hi Sarah, great question! In order to find an internship or job in another city, you truly have to do your research and put yourself out there. Contact companies that you connect with and ask if there's any open jobs or internships. Search online. Ask friends, family, teachers, and/or counselors if they know of any opportunities outside your city. You may get a lot of "no's" at first but it will all be worth it when you finally get that "yes!" so don't give up! I believe in you. I hope this helps and I wish you the best. Mireia

I have used the method that Mireia suggests, but have also used the model of creating my own value proposition and take a week to go to a city where I wanted to be and start talking to people in coffee shops about the best places to work. Remember that no “permanent” job is a forever decision. You might find your first job in the new city is a food service job, but that’s ok. It gets you to the new town, where you can start networking for a cooler job.

Hi Sarah! I agree with the comments here and wanted to share alittle more. I actually did what you're asking about, i.e., graduated college in one city and started my career in another. I moved to Florida after college. I had friends and family there, and I signed up at a temporary employment company. These are also known as contractors, and example is NetEffects. You sign up and they help you find work in your preferred field. This could be a path to finding a great employer in a city you like. It's how I found my full-time employer. It's all about networking "a.k.a. talking to people" to ask questions and help you discover what is best for you. Don't give up! Enjoy your next city.
