Im a new freshman in Vegas, I'm currently taking Principles of Health Science. We have only very few medical elective options that we can take. We have Medical Assistant and Community Health Science. I wanna be a PT, so what other courses should I take as an option and career building course?

14 year old freshman. never have never had experiences with anatomy or anything medical. im also still unsure about my career path but im planning on PT or anything medical.

Thank you comment icon I can’t answer your question directly, but I do know you can potentially find additional courses through your local community college. With approval, you can take a college class and potentially expand what you have access to. Jerome Dees Jr.

Hello, Sasha !

I think you have chosen such a wonderful career choice and I would like to advise you with going further in your education.

I would advise that you take the Community Health Science class. Although a Medical Assistant class would be good, too, I think that you will get an overall understanding about health as a foundation for Physical Therapy with the Community Health class. It will teach you about collective health care in a particular region and I think it will be most useful to you. The reason I suggest that instead of Medical Assistant is because medical assisting is a specific career with a certification. You would learn how to work with patients but it's not the same as physical therapy. You need some introduction classes right now and I think Community Health Care will give you that and than you can study specifics.

For Physical Therapy, in high school, I would advise that you take Anatomy every year in high school that you possibly can. Biology, Physiology and Math are also classes I would advise that you take in high school if you want to prepare for an advanced education for Physical Therapy. Keep advancing your written and verbal communications skills, too.

I wish you all the best in your studies !
Thank you comment icon Thank you, Michelle! Though I am not allowed yet to take Medical Assistant, said the teacher, do you think taking other electives such as Psychology and Physics are an option too? Sasha
Thank you comment icon You're very welcome, Sasha ! Yes, if Psychology and Physics are offered, I advise you should take them as they will be very beneficial for Physical Therapy study. Have an awesome day ! Michelle M.

If the courses where you live are limited, then I suggest you go through ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) and look at the certifications they offer. I suggest anything that says sports medicine. You could even go through their Personal Training program. It is by far and a way the best program and will really prepare you for your future in PT!
