Is WSU widely recognized in the engineering community?

I'm looking to go into a career in engineering, and I've applied to UW, but am also applying to WSU as a backup. My GPA is well above 3.5, so I know that I can get into UW for sure (they have guaranteed admission for those with a GPA of 3.5 or greater). If I don't make it into engineering at UW, would WSU be worth attending? #engineering #mechanical-engineering

If you are talking about Washington State University, it is certainly a well-respected institution for engineering. I have worked in my career with a number of WSU engineering graduates and they were quite good and well-respected in their disciplines. (WSU is also a pleasant place to be for a few years, in my view.) On the other hand, WSU is in a completely different tier than the top engineering schools like Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, U of Michigan, Purdue, or Georgia Tech, etc.

William, this is a great question. Picking where to attend school and what to major in are important. As you eluded to, UW is higher ranked in engineering than WSU. This means that more large companies will focus on recruiting from UW over WSU. However, WSU is still very good engineering school and you will still be able to get a great job when you graduate. Personally, I would focus more on which school better meets your needs. Things that you may want to consider would include class room size, accessibility of the professors, how big is the campus. A lot of students struggle in a large campus setting. After your first job, people will focus on what you can do, not where you got your degree.

I hope this helps. In the end, you have to do what is right for you.
