Bryant’s Answer

Hi Alfred,

That is so thoughtful and mature of you to recognize the support you received in high school and the desire to want to support them.

My first suggestion is to reach out to that teacher/mentor and tell them this. I taught high school for several years and LOVED when students reached out to me to check in, update me on how/what they were doing, and especially liked when they reached out to say "thank you". Use your best judgement to figure out what is the best way to contact this person. A thoughtful letter is always appreciated, a detailed email, or a short email setting up a call to hop on the phone to chat. Your for teachers/mentors would LOVE to hear from you!

Second, if you do have teachers in mind, ask them how you could help them and their classrooms. Many teachers would love to have their former students to talk to their current classes about your experience with that teacher and how that has helped you succeed today. Furthermore, depending on what you are doing since high school, maybe there is a way to bring that work into the classroom to benefit the students. (Even if it's just a presentation on what you do)

In short, the best place to start is to contact those supported you to simply tell them how much they helped your life and that you would love to now support them.

Best,

Bryant

Bryant recommends the following next steps:

Write out a detailed letter or email to send to one of your high school mentors
Schedule a phone call with one of your high school mentors

Alfred, you are on a wonderful track to be successful in whatever you do because you already have leadership skills as demonstrated by your desire to give back and recognize those who have supported you.  Never lose that attribute!  Suggest you start by making a list of Everyone who supported you and don't forget to include parents, siblings, friends and even casual acquaintances who may have taken the time to ask how you were doing and listened to your answer.  Then send off a brief note (handwritten or email whichever works for you) that simply says how much you appreciated their support.  Doesn't need to be long or wordy, but chances are they will save that note and definitely will smile when they receive it.

So glad to know there are thoughtful students like you making our world a better place!  Thanks for all you are doing and every good wish in your future!

Karen recommends the following next steps:

Think about and make a list of everyone who supported you.
Send a brief note or email simply saying "your support was appreciated."
Keep on doing what you're doing!

A note to update your current status is the best way to give back. I believe people who support you are not looking for a give back of anything physical. But they really want to see you to do well. Update them with your current progress or even how your days were. That's the best way.

Roland’s Answer

The best way to give back is to be as successful as you can be. Find others students that need assistance and pay it forward. When you truly want to help others and invest time in others there is no payment required. There are a lot of people that have contributed to my success and the way i can thank them all is by giving back and not letting there sacrifice for nothing.
