Is College going to be just like Highschool?

Highschool has not been the best years of my life and I’m worried, even with its hype, College won’t be as enjoyable as everyone makes it out to seem. I understand it’s more work but I’m worried that’s all it will be. #education #highschool #college

Thank you comment icon College is like a reset button. It allows you to reinvent your personal brand, find out your likes and dislikes. Its a wide open field of possibilities. Most people get close to each other because of seeing each other in the same college building all the time. So short answer if you go to a small school it could be just a little more adult like. If you go to a medium to big one, Nope! you make it what you like. Either way you can build the college experience of your dreams just believe. you will have an adjustment period (being away from home etc) but you will make friends. Join clubs , look at flyers on the bulletin boards for clubs or events or start one! Candice Whitman

I felt the same way because I also had a terrible high school experience, but in college you have almost limitless freedom beyond needing to turn assignments in, especially if you live on campus. You can socialize with who you want where you want and you aren't packed into tight hallways where you have no choice who you run into. You can start and join clubs or keep to yourself. That combined with being able to make your own weekly schedule means you can have a much better time during college than during high school.

First, I commend you for asking such a courageous question. Many people probably wonder this that share similar experiences with high school. I believe that college is an exciting next step in life. For me, high school was more of a bubble and now just a snapshot in time. In college, I was able to define myself more around my interests. The world just seemed "bigger". I can tell you that it is going to be what you make of it, but there are no guarantees to it being a "better" experience. I would just stay focused on learning as much as you can, find your passions (including the ones you know already are within you) and explore as much as you can. Sometimes this means to step out of your comfort zone and trying new things. Join clubs, organizations, take electives that jump off the page for you, and make a host of friends from all different walks of life! Continue to define your values and surround yourself around those who share similar ones!

Hi Adalynn,

I think it's great you're already starting to consider how to make college the best possible experience for you. In short, College CAN definitely be all that it's all cracked out to be if you seize the opportunities that college presents! While there can be more work in college (like longer readings and longer papers), college students usually have more flexibility to plan out those longer assignments.

I’m so sorry that high school hasn’t felt like the best years of your life, but luckily in my opinion, college gives you the chance to pursue whatever experience you are looking for. I think one of the biggest changes you will experience on day 1 of your college experience is independence. Once in college, you have the independence to decide how involved you are with activities, clubs, lectures as well as what opportunities to you seek.

As a teacher, I always told my high school students that college is exactly what you make of it. My advice for you start doing on day 1 to get the most out of your college experience. You'll see that college gives you a great amount of freedom and independence that you may be experiencing for the first time in your life (especially in a school setting). Take this freedom and seek out all opportunities available to you! Go to office hours, talk to your professors, make a commitment to attend all of your classes and study sessions, seek out tutoring, form study groups with friends/in your dorms etc. etc.

It's so easy for students to not seek out different opportunities and stay in their comfort zone because there isn't anyone telling them that they have to. My advice for you, seek out as much as you can from your college/university and you will undoubtedly have a great experience.

Best of luck on graduating high school and pursing your next journey in college!
