Hi Molly! Like Allyson said, your school probably has some sort of publication that is put out. See if you can get on their mailing list or attend their meetings. These are usually where they distribute pitches for issues of the publication, so you will have a chance to pick up any that are relevant to music.

Also, you can write for websites that are geared toward music (GIGSoup is always looking for writers), or you can start your own blog to do music reviews to get some music clips to show future employers. I intern for Society19 right now and write a lot of music articles (I'm in music journalism).

Best of luck!

Join a newspaper, magazine, or content-based website at your school
Look into off-campus websites to write for

To become more involved with musical journalism, do some writing and research! You already have good experience and knowledge of music because you love it and go to a literary arts school. Having passion and love for something makes it all the more easy to further fulfill other ventures involving it.

I'm sure at your school there's some kind of student newspaper, weekly student journal, magazine, or something! Start with your school and get involved there if there are open opportunities. Not only is this a good opportunity to practice journalism itself, but I'm sure they'd be open to doing articles about music. This would look great on a resume, so in life you can further pursue journalism as well as writing about music.

There's always the option to start blogging on your own about your personal interests. I know that in college I had a media class where we were required to create and write weekly in a blog about a topic of our choice. Coincidentally, mine was all about my favorite music artists. Blogging on your own is a good way to practice your writing skills while totally focusing on what you want to write about. I used wix.com to create my blog, but some other good sites are wordpress.com, weebly.com, and squarespace. Who knows, maybe you'll create a following with your blog and could become well-known for your writing about music! :)

Thank you comment icon Great advice! As a music journalist myself, I can't think of a better way to put it! Ashley Paskill
