Débora’s Answer

First of all, you have to ask yourself simple questions, it will help you to know yourself better:

  • what are the things that you like to do in your life?
  • what are the things that you are good at doing ? And does it naturally without realizing the time passes?
  • What are the things that people usually say that You’re good at?
  • What are the things that you most appreciate in life?

You have to make a choice that is aligned with your personal purpose and values. What is really important to you.

If nothing comes to your mind, ask people that you trust what are the strengths, qualities and skills they think you have.

Asking others about us help us recognize ourselves.

Débora recommends the following next steps:

Try really hard to answer those questions
Make a list of all options that come to your mind
Take a look at SMART methodology, you can find about it on google, it will guide you to settle your goals.

Nicole’s Answer

Hi Sean P. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

The previous answer provides some really awesome guidance. In my case, my decision was based on what I saw at the school that I decided to attend (campus life, some aspects of the engineering program) vs other schools that I visited, what I was being offered in terms of financial support and proximity to family and friends.

I did have the good fortune of three things...1) I was pretty clear on my desired major 2)I knew what type of campus life I would have been comfortable in 3) I got a chance to visit different schools in different parts of the country. Of note, other than the fact that the schools I visited had reputable engineering programs, I didn't know much about the schools I visited. In hindsight, I am glad for that because that allowed me to keep an open mind on the possibilities.

If you have the opportunity to visit different campuses (whether live or virtually), I highly encourage you to take advantage of it...get to know as much about the school, campus life/culture as you possibly can. Certainly, take the time to research the financial aid process and be clear eyed on your financial responsibilities. In this regard, it is a good idea to check and recheck your financial status to ensure you remain clear.

Hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck to you!
