Is this the career for me?
I want to be a musician and I know I do, I always have wanted to but I fear I won't be able to actually achieve it no matter how hard I try because it's such a competitive career, I also love art and while I don't want it to be my career I know it'll be my fall back plan. I just want to know if I should take the risk for a music career. #career-path #career-choice

Hi Catherine!
Why doubt yourself before you even try? Most people don’t know what they are capable of until they get out there and just do it – and I’m sure you can surprise yourself, too!
Musical career is indeed highly competitive, but the good news is: there can be more than just one winner in the competition. Not all musicians are on the Grammy Award list or performing for La Scala, of course, but many enjoy doing what they love and make a decent living out of music.
However, pursuing any creative career can be a risky move, so in order to overcome your fear of failure, I suggest you test-drive this path first. Think of making music your big-scale side hobby, get out there and see what happens and how much you gonna like it:
• get involved into whatever (free) musical performance projects you can find in your city
• make your own musical records and share them in social media
Do it on a regular basis for a year or two – and pay close attention to the feedback you receive:
Do you enjoy the experience? Does it feel like something you’d love doing in the years ahead?
How does the audience accept your performance? Do you receive a lot of hits/views/visitors? Positive reviews? Invitations? Do they ask you for more?
If you answer “yes” to the above, then your chances look good. If it’s a "no", you’ll still have that fall back plan.
Hope that helps and good luck!

Hi Catherine! Great question. If you are passionate about music, pursue it. Don’t be afraid to change your career over time because as a person you will change. I started out with a degree in Criminology and Psychology and now I work for a Technology company which I never expected to pursue. I am passionate about people and helping them be successful and that translates to my current job. You won’t know what you want to do until you take a risk and experience it.
