What is the most exciting job a Mechanical Engineer can have and how do I obtain it?
I'm not sure exactly what I want to do with my degree when I get out of college, but I know Mechanical Engineering is the broadest of the engineering disciplines.
There are other majors at my school that I could have chosen, like Robotics Engineering or Aerospace, but I don't want to limit my career choices yet. Is choosing Mechanical still a good option?

Hi Sydney! I can definitely relate to your situation - I had the same problem! I studied mechanical engineering and I am now working in robotics. So, your major certainly does not determine your career and mechanical engineering is a great option. My advice is to diversify your experiences in college and find what interests you . Your college will offer robotics and aerospace classes to mechanical engineers - take them! See if they are for you. Join the robotics club, get in the machine shop, and build things.
To me, robotics is the most exciting space for mechanical engineers to be in. I work as a Hardware Engineer in this space. The things I like about it are:
-You get to work with engineers of different backgrounds (software, electrical, ect)
-You typically get to work on the whole project and see the outcome of your work which is very satisfying
-You get to make really exciting products
-Work is never boring because you are always learning!

I want to start off with saying that I had that same question when I started my career as well. I went into college knowing I wanted to do some sort of engineering, however I was torn. I wanted to go into Aerospace Engineering as a degree, however I weighed the alternative--Mechanical Engineering. I chose Mechanical Engineering as it was a very broad engineering degree that is recognized in almost every industry. I do not regret my decision AT ALL. I loved the curriculum and education I got. I couldn't have been any happier that I chose that path.
While, I am not preaching to go the Mechanical Engineering route, I am saying for a career prospective it is very broad and will allow you to get into most engineering careers that you want. Please follow your own path and follow what intrigues you, but just know that the mechanical route is my favorite!
Thanks
