Hello Gourav,
Thanks for asking. I was in a PhD program in Economics previously and I feel like I can answer this question.
It is quite difficult to get into PhD programs as they are very competitive. It relies more on GPA, GRE scores and previous research experience. Instead of competing over a couple hundred spots like you are in a MBA program, you're competing with 10-25 people to get into a PhD program. It is very competitive. The UK form of PhD programs are quite different than US programs as they're mostly 3-4 years instead of the 5-7 years. Most people in UK PhD programs come from a master's program at the same or similar institutions and those tend to be research focused masters, so I'd look into either looking at master's programs that focus on research at the same or similar institutions in order to get into Oxford. There are other great programs out there, so I would look into those as well.
Best of luck!
Thanks,
Johan

Hello Gourav,
Applying for a PhD at Oxford University
To pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Oxford, you will need to follow a specific set of steps and meet certain requirements. Here is a comprehensive guide on how to apply for a Ph.D. at Oxford University.
Research the Programs and Departments
The first step in applying for a Ph.D. at Oxford University is to research the programs and departments that align with your academic interests and career goals. Oxford offers a wide range of doctoral programs across various disciplines, so it’s essential to identify the specific area of study you wish to pursue.
Meet the Academic Requirements
Once you have identified the program you are interested in, it is crucial to ensure that you meet the academic requirements for admission. For most Ph.D. programs at Oxford, applicants are expected to hold a relevant master’s degree with high academic standing. In some cases, a strong undergraduate degree may be sufficient, but this varies by department and program.
Identify Potential Supervisors
As part of the application process, it is important to identify potential supervisors who have expertise in your area of research interest. Oxford encourages applicants to reach out to potential supervisors before submitting their formal application to discuss their research proposal and ensure that there is alignment between the applicant’s research goals and the supervisor’s expertise.
Prepare Your Research Proposal
One of the key components of your Ph.D. application will be a research proposal outlining the intended focus of your doctoral research. The research proposal should demonstrate a clear understanding of the research area, highlight its significance, and outline the methodology you plan to employ.
Gather Required Documents
In addition to the research proposal, applicants will need to gather other required documents, including academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and proof of English language proficiency (if applicable). It is important to carefully review the specific requirements for your chosen program and ensure that all necessary documents are prepared in advance.
Submit Your Application

Prepare for Interviews (if applicable)
Some Ph.D. programs at Oxford may require applicants to participate in an interview as part of the selection process. If invited for an interview, it is important to prepare thoroughly and familiarize yourself with potential questions related to your research proposal and academic background.
Await Admission Decision
After submitting your application and completing any required interviews, you will need to await the admission decision from Oxford University. The timeline for receiving a decision may vary by program, so it is important to remain patient during this stage.

The University of Oxford offers a DPhil in Financial Economics, which is their equivalent of a PhD. Here are the steps to apply:
1. **Meet the Entry Requirements**: You should have a good honours degree (at least a 2:1 or equivalent) and preferably a specialist master's in a subject relevant to your intended study with a strong average mark. A high GMAT or GRE score is also usually required, and if English is not your first language, you'll need to meet the university's English language requirements.
2. **Prepare Your Research Proposal**: A clear and well-structured research proposal is a crucial part of your application. It should outline the research questions you intend to explore, your proposed methodology, and how your research will contribute to the field of financial economics.
3. **Find a Supervisor**: You'll need to identify potential supervisors who are experts in the area you wish to research. You can do this by exploring the faculty profiles on the University of Oxford's website. Some applicants may choose to contact potential supervisors before submitting their application.
4. **Prepare Your Application**: This typically includes your CV, academic transcripts, research proposal, samples of written work, and references. Some applicants may also be asked to attend an interview.
5. **Apply**: Submit your application via the University of Oxford's online application system. Make sure to check the deadlines and application fee.
6. **Funding**: The University of Oxford offers a range of scholarships and funding options. You'll need to apply for these separately, and it's best to start researching funding options as early as possible.
7. **Interview**: If your application is shortlisted, the next step is usually an interview. This could be in person, via telephone or online.
Remember that admission to Oxford is very competitive, so it's important to submit a strong application that clearly demonstrates your academic achievements, your potential for original research, and your passion for the field of financial economics. Good luck!

I would recommend that you have a look at the faculty in the School of Business and the research they are doing to find out if this overlaps with your research interests.
Good luck!
