How Can I get into Brand Management with Experience below?

I have experience in customer success account management at Amazon, Enterprise Account management at a startup and want to move into brand management. Please give me tips on how I can get a brand management role without a masters degree

Hi Mehmet, Brand Management, like many fields, is quite diverse. You could focus on product specific brand management (so managing a specific product or product portfolio within a company) or manage a global brand (which is where I landed). A four year degree is good start, and a masters will be helpful as you grow in responsibility (and keep in mind- many companies contribute to further education). Finding a company that interests you with their culture, products and industry is a good place to start. Take advantage of internships, and even if they aren't in brand management, getting your foot in the door and learning the company is a great start. Brand Management has so many facets, and helping with a related project is a how I ended up hiring a few team members. Also, helping with brand related activities in a volunteer aspect and connecting with brand groups on LinkedIn is a good way to build the resume and skill set.

Hello, Mehmet !

Although you do not exactly need a Masters Degree for Brand Management, it will greatly depend on what sector of business you want to do your career in. It is a very broad area and product/service specific. I would suggest going for a Bachelors Degree in business management and a Masters Degree would be ideal, however, you've mentioned it is not in your plan.

I emphasize education because if you apply for jobs in that field, there are going to be fellow applicants applying also that have Bachelors and Masters degrees and an employer may see it as a deal maker for who to interview. There is competition for all careers, but since you are planning this now, you can consider all options.

One way to have opportunities would be to discover a place where you can network and develop professional contacts. That would be any business conferences, college, and any business related activities in your town. Check with the local Chamber of Commerce or Town or City Hall to inquire about business organizations and events in your area.

To be a brand manager, you will need excellent communication skills, critical thinking skills, creativity. You will also need to be adaptable and proactive. You must be a trend-knower and a trend-setter and keep up with the latest trends in your product or service field. You will also need strong research skills and be able to interpret the findings of your research. You can see if there are any on line courses to sharpen any of these skills to an expert level, but I recommend going an academic route and getting a college degree for this.

So, no one can actually tell you how you can become a brand manager. It depends on too many factors. My advice is to register at Linked in and Indeed and set notifications for brand management positions and see what most companies are requiring. The best person to show you how to become a brand manager will be you after you've sharpened your skills, obtained a competitive college degree and decide what product and service you'd like to work with.
