Hello Chelise,
As a straight-sized person looking to become a stylist for a plus-size brand, it’s essential to understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with styling for a larger clientele. Here are some tips and knowledge you should consider for both the job and the interview:
1. Research and Education:
Familiarize yourself with the plus-size fashion industry, including popular brands, designers, and influencers.
Learn about the history of plus-size fashion and the ongoing efforts to promote body positivity and inclusivity.
Understand the specific sizing and fit requirements for plus-size clothing, as well as the materials and construction techniques that cater to this market.
2. Empathy and Sensitivity:
Recognize that plus-size individuals may have different experiences and preferences when it comes to fashion and styling.
Be open-minded and non-judgmental, understanding that body size is just one aspect of a person’s identity.
Show respect and understanding for the diverse body types and shapes that you will be styling.
3. Knowledge of Trends and Styles:
Stay updated on the latest fashion trends and adapt them to suit plus-size clients.
Learn about the different styles and silhouettes that flatter plus-size bodies, such as A-line dresses, empire waists, and high-waisted bottoms.
Be aware of the challenges that plus-size individuals face when it comes to finding stylish and well-fitting clothing.
4. Networking and Collaboration:
Connect with plus-size models, influencers, and other professionals in the industry to gain insights and build relationships.
Attend events, workshops, and conferences related to plus-size fashion to expand your knowledge and network.
Collaborate with plus-size bloggers, photographers, and other creatives to showcase your styling skills and promote body positivity.
5. Interview Preparation:
Research the specific brand you’ll be working for, understanding their mission, target audience, and aesthetic.
Prepare examples of your styling work, highlighting how you’ve successfully styled straight-sized clients in a way that could translate to plus-size clients.
Be ready to discuss your understanding of the plus-size fashion industry, your empathy for plus-size clients, and your commitment to learning and growing in this role.
By demonstrating your dedication to understanding and embracing the plus-size fashion industry, you can showcase your potential as a stylist for a plus-size brand. Good luck with your interview!
GOD BLESS,
James.

Hello, Chelise !
Thank you for sharing the great news about your upcoming interview ! It sounds very exciting and I would like to give you some advice about what you're concerned with.
Your size as a stylist won't matter. As a stylist, you can do it all. Keep in mind that you not only style fashions/grooming and dressing ensembles for plus size, you also can style for children, older people, people that have disabilities, men, women, and anyone. What you will want to show in your interview is that you like doing it all. If there is time, try to ask a plus size friend or family member if you can style an outfit for them, sort of practice as if you were the host of "What Not To Wear". Read up a bit about which style of outfits are flattering for plus size and do this for both men and women. I have left some links to useful websites below.
Make sure that you have photos of some examples of your styling. It's okay if you don't. You can also consider registering at the website Trend Me and do some styling on there and print out your stylings. Remember to talk about styling from head to toe in your interview. Accessories and hair styling matter and the interviewer will want to know that you can combine an outfit fully. Remember that anytime you have styled someone, regardless if you've gotten paid for it or not, that is experience.
As I've mentioned, your own size shouldn't matter, at least I hope it won't. It's a question that wouldn't be appropriate to ask in the interview, however. It's just a matter of waiting to hear back from the company after the interview. You most likely won't be the only non-plus size person they will see. The important thing is that you appear professional, have a comfortable amount of confidence and keep eye contact with the interviewer. I think you'll do fine !
I hope that this is somewhat helpful and I wish you all the best in obtaining the position !
