Greetings Daniel,

As long as we have the seas, rivers, and lakes; there will be a need for seafarers. Here is a snapshot of the projected outlook for careers in this area
The projected seaman job growth rate is 1% from 2018-2028.
About 500 new jobs for seamen are projected over the next decade.
Seaman salaries have increased 7% for seamen in the last 5 years.
There are over 4,335 seamen currently employed in the United States.
There are 174 active seaman job openings in the US.
The average seaman's salary is $55,413.

Although not plentiful, there are jobs in the field. It comes down to your desire to pursue and the training you seek. Best regards for your future endeavors.
