What advice or steps should I take in starting a business?

I want to start up a boutique to sell my own line of clothing after college, but I'm unsure of where to start and what the first steps I should take.

Haley one of the biggest challenge to any business is marketing. This is where most of your budget goes. The advice above is a perfect start but you should also begin to expand your talent via social media. Share your visions, your work and gain a good number of loyal followers. Becoming a manufacturer of clothing will require some capital and you may want to work or find an internship for a little while. The basics for any business are typical, local or county business license, DBA name published in a periodical. Sales tax license and of course an online presence. Having a good solid following on social media provides you with a base to convert them to customers and avoid spending huge amounts of money advertising your business. Best to you.

Hi Haley - One thing you could try to do is try to speak with someone who has started a similar business. Are there any boutiques near you where you could go and try to meet with the owner? You can ideally then ask them important questions for starting such a business like how they got started and the amount of funding needed to get started. In order to gain more skills for starting your own line of clothing you could look at attending a fashion design program and then take a couple of additional business classes as well to help give you the tools you need to operate the boutique.
